In your comments, please reflect on the following while comparing the Native Son video and the Heifer Project Video:
~What was alike and/or different about the two groups profiled?
~What seemed to be the differences in the factors that kept people included or excluded in the educational process?
~What were their obstacles to education?
~Why was (or is one) more successful while the other isn't/ wasn't?
~ The first group and the second group are all experiencing problems during getting education. Their difference is that the obstacles are different, and the second one is more successful.
ReplyDelete~ The factors that affect the education process are different. Some of them are outside factors, which are hard to get over.(eg: lack of money) Rest of them are inside factors, which are easy to get over.(eg: lazy)
~ First group obstacle: Lack of money(can't even meet basic life needs)
Second group obstacle: Tradition
~ The second one is more successful, because I think the society gave them more help, and they're more willing to learn.

SELF REFLECTION
I thought dropouts were all bad students, because I only considered one of the many reasons of dropping out: They drop out because they got expelled as punishment of inappropriate behaviors. Now I know that many people are actually forced to drop out, and it is very wrong to say dropouts are bad and have no bright future.
1) The two groups of people had similarities and differences. Both groups were both in the need of education. The people in the Chicago though had the access to education while the people in Nepal did not have it. There was a choice to leave school in Chicago while religion restricted the women in Nepal to go to school.
ReplyDelete2) For the boy in Chicago, his father was an alcohol addict and his family situation was not the best. He started to stray away from school and ended up dropping out. The women in Nepal had to attend to their children and do the housework at a young age, preventing them from going to school. They did not have the choice. Religion was also accounted in the learning of the people in Nepal.
3) For the boy in Chicago, he didn't complete his learning in high school and when he wanted to get a college education, he needed to pass the high school diploma exam. It was harder for him to catch up with the education. For the women in Nepal, the men in the village did not have faith that education would make them more useful than they were in the house.
4)The women in Nepal were more successful than the boy in Chicago because the women had actually became successful. The boy was still trying to succeed. There was proof that the women were a great success. The village that they lived in became different and the education started to spread to other villages as more and more people became leaders for others in other towns.
1.) The two groups were both alike and different. They were alike in the way that the two groups were both struggling to be educated, but they were different in the way that, firstly, one was successful, and they strove to be educated in very different ways. The boy from Chicago was trying to get a public school education and learn in the schooling system there, while the women in Nepal were trying to sustain themselves and learn something that related to their lives in specific.
ReplyDelete2.) The Native Son's problem was mainly money, and family issues. He truly wanted to do well and get educated, but his economic situation severely limited the ways he could attempt to achieve that goal. Also, his family relationships were not very good (his mother being an alcoholic and his father being homeless), so he didn't have a lot of support from his parents. With the Nepali women, tradition, gender roles, and work prohibited them from getting educated. In Nepal, the tradition was that women did housework and took care of everything at home, so they were busy with that. People thought they did not NEED to get educated, because they were merely doing housework and taking care of children.
3.) Again, although the Chicago boy wanted to get a job and go to school, it was mentioned that he did not even have the money for bus fare to get to a job fair. Also, he needed to pass some examinations and tests (GEDs) so that he could get the equivalent of a diploma. In Nepal, again, gender roles often kept them from learning.
4.) I think that the project in Nepal was more successful because the women were learning things that related to their life in specific. Also, this was a great example of the saying: "Give a man a fish, and he will have dinner for a night, but teach a man to fish, and he will have food for a lifetime." Instead of giving the women the materials for them to be happy and secure, they taught them how to do it themselves.

ReplyDeleteI thought dropouts didn't want to be at school and would were lazy. But I now know that is defiantly not the case. Most of the kids do want to be attending school but they have family commitments which require them to be either working or with their families.

-Both were seeking education, but the difference was the people in Chicago had the oppertunity to be educated but in Nepal there is no opportunity to be educated for women.
-The boy in Chicago dropped out of school because his dad was an alcoholic so he dropped out of school. In Nepal women cannot be educated because of religion, so they didn't have a choice.
-Since the boy in Chicago dropped out of school he couldn't go to college when he wanted to. Women in Nepal are not allowed to be educated.
-The women was more successful because she was most likely very anxious to learn, after not being able to learn because she was a women and finally being presented the option to would be amazing for her.

ReplyDelete1. The two groups profiled were similar in some ways and different in others. They both were in need of education and thrived to receive proper education. In the video of the boy from Chicago, he had to leave his school and drop out because of economic problems and some family issues. On the other hand, the women in Nepal were restricted from receiving education just because of the fact that they were women. Although the boy from Chicago had the access to receive education, the women in Nepal did not.
2. As said before, the boy had to drop out because of his poor family problems and some of the economic problems of his family, whereas the women in Nepal were solely restricted from receiving education just because of the fact that they were women.
3. As said in previous questions, the boy had economic and family issues whereas the women in Nepal were restricted because of their sex and gender.
4. The women in Nepal were more successful than the boy from Chicago because the women strived for education and eventually ended up receiving proper education. Although the boy tried to get education, the women in Nepal were desperate to receive education. Their level of intensity in wanting to receive education was different and that is one of the reasons why the women were more successful than the boy. Since the women thrived for education, they found a way so that all of them could receive proper education and learn how to read.
